Philly Play Camps Set to Open, Include Five New Sites

July 1, 2015 (Philadelphia) – Philly Play, started by Councilman Bobby Henon (6th District) in 2013, is expanding to include five additional recreation centers this summer. The camps will feature Philly Play Coaches, play-focused trainers to coach and encourage campers throughout the six-week camp.

“Philly Play is starting to hit its stride as a program and I’m excited to see it grow to include another five recreation centers this summer,” Councilman Henon said. “I’m looking forward to another fun summer of getting more kids around Philadelphia engaged in indoor and outdoor play!”

The 2015 camps start Monday, July 6 and run concurrently with summer camps offered by the Department of Parks and Recreation, supplementing programming offered at the 15 recreation sites with guided Philly Play-specific training.

At the end of the program, campers will be invited to the 2nd Annual Philly Play Summer Challenge on August 12, from 10-2, at Lincoln High School, 3201 Ryan Ave. to participate in an ‘all day play day.’ The inaugural Summer Challenge brought more than 3,400 Philly Play campers to Vogt Rec Center in 2015.

The five new recreation centers are:

  • Chew Playground, 1800 Washington Ave.
  • Francisville Playground, 1737 Francis St.
  • Wright (Mantua) Rec Center, 3320 Haverford Ave.
  • Francis Myers Rec Center, 5800 Chester Ave.
  • Feltonville Rec Center, 231 W. Wyoming Ave.
